Lane swimming allows swimmers to swim continuous lengths (laps) in the pool, without interference from others engaged in casual swimming or lessons. Each lane is marked by ropes and categorized by speed: slow, medium, and fast. This allows swimmers to choose a lane that matches their pace and skill level.

There are a few rules to follow when lane swimming to allow everyone to enjoy their time swimming:
- Swim in a lane suited to your pace.
- Give way to faster swimmers at the end of your length.
- Change to a slower lane if you are being regularly lapped.
- Stay out of the way if you are resting.
- Swim in single file to allow swimmers to pass and return in the same lane.
