We spoke to Harry Walton, our Dry Facilities Technical Services Assistant at Springfield, who has been using his allocated volunteer hours to support the Government of Jersey’s Natural Environment Department.

What inspired you to start volunteering?

For me, it was about giving back to the community whenever possible. I also think it’s important to step outside your comfort zone and try new experiences. Volunteering allows you to do that while making a positive impact.

Why did you choose the Natural Environment Department? What made you interested in volunteering for them?

I've always had an interest in nature and conservation, and I know that many environmental projects rely on volunteers to run effectively. When I saw this opportunity advertised, I realised I could use my volunteering hours to support another government department—and it turned out to be a really rewarding experience.

Can you tell us a bit about the work the Natural Environment Department does?

The Natural Environment team is responsible for maintaining and protecting Jersey’s landscapes and key areas of interest, such as Noirmont. These public spaces are popular for dog walking, exercise, and recreation, so regular maintenance is essential. The team carries out tasks like planting native trees, clearing pathways, removing invasive species, and educating the public about the wildlife that inhabits these areas.

Has volunteering for the department changed your perspective?

Absolutely. Volunteering with this team has given me a newfound appreciation for their work and for volunteering in general. The department operates with a small team, so they rely heavily on collaboration and efficiency to keep up with seasonal changes, weather conditions, and other external factors. Seeing their dedication first-hand was eye-opening.

What has been the most memorable or rewarding experience you've had while volunteering?

One of the standout moments was meeting and working with people from different government departments. It’s rare to get the chance to collaborate across sectors, and it really reinforced how interconnected our work can be.

Have you developed any new skills or knowledge through your volunteering?

Definitely! I’ve learned a lot about Jersey’s unique landscape and the different species of plants and animals that thrive here—as well as those that shouldn’t be here.

What advice would you give to someone considering volunteering?

Go for it! You never know what impact you might have or what you might learn along the way.
